This is a good example because all they have is the setting of the video and a camera that records HD the video also show how they think the video should be in there own opinion. Is it possible to make a professional quality music video for $99? I think that it is possible to make a music video for 99$ in professional quality because if your creative and have good ideas making a music video you unique. i think that this video is a very unique video because it shows the same person on 2 half's of the screen in different location's and the editing of the video is very good because its in sync ad it looks amazing
large number of cuts: 172 cuts Le youth- cool 99 cuts Bastille- of the night Le Youth- Cool
A good example of cut scenes is a video with 100 or over cuts. an example for this is Le Youth- cool around the first 60 seconds there were about 68 cut scenes this is because the song its self is upbeat and a fast song. sometimes depending on the genre of the song may have different amount of cuts Le youth- cool is a dance song so you would expect the video to match the tune of it fast but for one cut scene the time for it would arrange to 0.5 -1.5 seconds. this is a good example because it has a large number of cuts and it goes well with the song. the technique has been successful because by adding that many cuts they wanted it to be a fast paced video. i think that having a fast based beat to the song and having a music video that is synced with the song is more appealing to the audience because it shows how much effort the artist has put in and make the audience stay to watch all of the video.
Bastille- of the night A bad example for a large number of cut scenes is Bastille- of the night because during the first 30 seconds there was only 2 cut scenes from a road to a man in his car driving but near to the end when the beat started to get faster there was more cut scenes but still not enough think that the video was successful staying to the story line but was starting to get disoriented for the audience. the video was not successful with the cuts because it didn't match the beat nor the lyrics. I think that the artist was trying to show how much one person can take because the police man felt like he had enough of seeing all these dead body he just wanted it to stop. I think this benefits the audience by showing a story line but i also think that the video was getting boring after the first minuet
Special Effects Good: lana del rey- summertime sadness Bad- Mondonna- Get Together lana del rey- summertime sadness
A good example of special effects is Lana Del Rey because compared to other videos such as Mondonna- get together you can tell that summertime sadness has much better effects that get together the effects in Lana's video are much smooth and clean more realistic. the effects its self go really well with the song because the transition between the effects are fast and work well because the song its self is fast. apart from that the video was very successful with the special effects because the artist was aiming for the 3D effect to go along with the music video. the video was good because the effects were clean and professional they way it was set out in the music video. i think that the benefits of this video is that its different because the special effects is more 3D than normal effects
Mondonna- get together Mondonna is a very good example for a bad special effect music video this is because she wanted it to be animated aswell as having a lot of effects but when effect clash they don't look good in the music video. I think by watching the video you can tell its not sync well because when the song is going fast the effect is going quite slow apart from that the song was good but at times there was good effects but the effects was a blur at times. i think that the benifit for this video is that the lyrics match the video but the effects don't look good
cutting to the beat Good- Calvin Harris & Alesso - Under Control ft. Hurts Bad - Sub Focus- Endorphins ft. Alex Clare Calvin Harris & Alesso - Under Control ft. Hurts A good example of cutting to the beat is Calvin Harris & Alesso- Under Control ft. Hurts. This music video is a good example because when the song gets faster the scenes cut to the pace of the beat for example when Hurts say "when the day light comes" the beat starts to pick up and go faster the clips in the Music video started to go at the same pace as the beat but before he said "when the day light comes" its slow and the clip takes more time to cut
Sub Focus- Endorphins ft. Alex Clare A bad example to cutting to the beat is Sub Focus- Endorphins ft. Alex Clare. this is because the song its self is a dance song but if you were to watch the video without no audio you wouldn't think its a dance song. i say this because as a dance song the music video should be cutting to the beat if the beat is going fast the music video should go fast just for 2 seconds at the start when the beat starts to pick up its fast but thought out the chorus its quite slow and failed to cut to the beat
Varied camera language Good - The Wanted - Show Me Love (America) Bad - Maejor Ali - Lolly (Explicit) ft. Juicy J, Justin Bieber
The Wanted- Show Me Love (America) The wanted- show me love is a good example of good varied camera language because not only did they show a story in the video on a relationship falling apart they also showed them self's as if they have been through a similar situation. this is also good because they used the different typed of camera angles to show the story in more detail.
Maejor Ali - Lolly (Explicit) ft. Juicy J, Justin Bieber
Maejor Ali - Lolly (Explicit) ft. Juicy J, Justin Bieber is a bad example of varied camera language because the video was of one camera shot a "wide shot" and a close up. i think this is a bad example because it does not show a story in anyway. the song its self is about a girl all they have in the video is girls dancing. i also think this is a bad video becuase its done in one area and dont shot no camera language with the audience
Green screen
Good- Sebastian Ingrosso, Tommy Trash, John Martin- Reload Bad- Big Sean- Beware (Explicit) ft. Lil Wayne, Jhene Aiko
a good example of green screening is Sebastian Ingrosso, Tommy Trash, John Martin- Reload this is because because the video looked realistic even thought more than 75% of the video was a green screen. this is a good example because they avoided the shadows from the light and it looked really clean and flowed well. they wanted to make a effect of time travel because i think the start of the video was the ice age and time travels to our time but as the ice age is no more they used a green screen and it looks very good
A bad example of green screening is Big Sean- Beware (Explicit) ft. Lil Wayne, Jhene Aiko because through out the video part of his head has been cut out and there are some shadows at times overall i dont think this is a good green screen video i think that it was a low budget music video that they didn't out a lot of thought in to it
Lip- Synching
Good- OneRepublic- Counting Stars
Bad- Iggy Azalea- Change Your Life (Explicit) ft. T.I.
a good example of lip syncing is OneRepublic- Counting Stars. this is because through out the video the music was synced with his vocals the lip syncing is not slow not cut off nor is it delayed. this is also a good lip syncing music video because there was no faults
A bad example of lip syncing is Iggy Azalea- Change Your Life (Explicit) ft. T.I. this is because in the video when she is "singing" the lip syncing is cut of to go to the next cut this happens through out the music video this technique has not been successfully because it dose not look good nor did it work
There
are multiply styles of music videos that artist make the four that I will be
going over is:
·Concert
·Animation
·Intertextuality
·Narrative
I will be giving and expiations about all of them and a
example of a music video for each bullet point
Concert
A
video that express a concert style video is Swedish House Mafia- Don’t You
Worry Child ft. John Martin. This video was filmed in there last tour. When you
listen to the music video you can hear the crowed screaming for them to come on
stages and at the end clapping and screaming of the stage. This style of video
is a live concert one because a performance video has not got a crowed and this
video music video has a crowd of thousands of people this video is not a as
live style either because a as live video has a set up crowed for the camera
and the don’t you worry child video was filmed live with a real crowd. Some
artist use a concert video because there two reasons they wanted to get the
fans involved in the video and the other reason is if they are breaking up the
band to do solo work they want to say thank you to here fans for supporting
them thought out because Swedish House
Mafia were breaking up they wanted to say thank you and near to the end they
said “Thank you for coming out today we just want to say thank you for your
support” I
think as this was there last song together it was a good idea to put fans in
the video. In the video the DJ’s were hardly in the music video on when they
did the over the shoulder shot over all 3 DJ’S. I liked this video because one
they were one of my favorite artists and two the music video was outstanding. The conventions for a dance concert video are flashing
lights, the people screaming, people jumping and camera angles. In the video when the beat starts to pick up for the first time at 1:30 the beat starts to pick up and the lights are flashing faster and faster but at 2:07 the beat starts to go slower and the jumping of the audience starts to get in to slow motion this shows that the music video was in sync with the beat and did work very well
High camera angle All 3 DJ'S looking down upon the fans
Animation
The
next style of a music video I’ll be talking about animation an animation video
can be a stop animation video made out of images and an animation video can be
a cartoon one for example kanye west – heartless this video was a about a break
up he went through and he wanted to express his feelings and made his love life
to a rap song. This style of a music video can show more meaning that and IRL
video (in real life) because artist can show there messages and exaggerate
more. Working with a animation video isn't easy but you can add shots in that
would take longer for IRL videos for example at 58 seconds kanye west is
standing out of the ex-girlfriend’s home looking down upon on him but the camera
was placed looking above to her. He says “ lost soul to a women so heartless”
and in the video he kept on showing the ex-girlfriend as a ghost figure because
he went from being brown to blue. The conventions for animation video are to have bright colors and low camera angles, in a rap animation video the conventions is a girl like
the Kanye west song. through out the music video there have been high camera angles showing that hes being looked down by everyone and his girlfriend for example at 0:29 the angle is high showing hes being looked down
The top right shot is the shot from the video 58 seconds
Narrative
A
narrative music video is when the artist is in the song but stays in a different
character for example usher – Climax is a good example because he’s acting as a
man who is having a fear with a married women during the video there were many scenes
when he stayed in character like at 1.33 he stayed in his character to protect
his partner and shot her husband then at 2:10 there’s a scene when he and she
were both running away. Though out the video the camera angle is always on him
because he’s one of the main actors in this video. There is multiple scenes
when he’s in the car. There’s one action shot when he pulls the gun out and
walks in the house. The types of shots that they use in the video are a close
up when he’s in the car because this is showing how serious he is about the
women and to show his expression. The impact to the audience is a meaningful one because he
wanted to send a message to the public and in an interview he said “when a
relationship hits its climax keep trying”. Having a narrative video was
,meaning he wanted there to be meaning behind the story and have a strong
impact on the audience I think he reached his goal because the video itself has
over a million views and was number one in multiple country’s. The conventions an narrative video is a message that the
artist is trying to give to their audience and the story is mostly about
relationships.
Usher
Intertextuality
Intertextuality
is a type of music video this type is when a artist make a music video in a
same way as a movie scene for example I Can Transform Ya- Chris Brown nearly thought
out the video there we scene that would remind people of the film franchise Transformers this video
its self was based on the movie and even in the lyrics the artist would always
refer to the movie the main reference he gave was “I can transform Ya like optimums
prime” Because transformers was about cars transforming in to large robots the artist
picked fast but small car for him to transform in and out to. The video as I said
has May scene where they transform to there even a scene when text transformed
in to the featuring artist. Though out the video they would always enter and
exit the scene by transforming to their original human form. This was a good
example because in the whole duration of the music video he kept referring to the
film and there entrance and exit to the scene was to transform like the film. The conventions for a interxtuality music video is having a song
based on any type of media and media text refers to another
At 0. 40 when he says i can transform ya he transfors from a car in to a human.
In the song the artist shows a fire truck that changes in to a human and refers to optimums prime because optimums prime transforms in to a truck
Intertextuality- Parody
a parody is a video when is mocking another type of media or a person but sometimes the artist who makes the parody have a deeper meaning or highlight things that show realism. a good example of a parody is Eminem- We Made You. the video that Eminem made is a good example because through out the song he was mocking other artist and actors for example he first mocked Jessica Simpson because she is very skinny they picked a women that is not skinny like her and made her eat a "Big Mac" there is also multiple scene in the video when a group of people are mocking a awarding winning show star trek. in the video near to the end he mentions Blake Williams and Amy whine house because the dated when he was hocking both they were both in jail also after that scene Blake Williams was dancing like the were in jail house rock. at 0:10 seconds in the parody he calls out jessica simpson and she comes up on the screen and makes fun out of her
Jail House Rock
Interpretative
a video that interpenetrates the visual directly on to a story that makes the lyrics. a good example of interpretation is Kanye west all on the lights this is because in the chorus the group says "all on the light" and in text form the words come up on the screen also he has i hold my head and hes holding his head they things kanye says when he raping its in the background or hes doing it him self. through out the video he would always say ghetto university and a girl standing in front of the university. "cop- lights, flash lights, spot lights" when kanye would say that for a second there would be flashing lights and a spot light on him standing on a car. the conventions for this music video is standing i one are rapping or sinning , a bout a girl or daughter and something to go the police is in the video for example the "cop car"
"cop cars"
Surrealism/ abstract
I surreal and abstract
is a video that has special effects to make it look good and a video that you
would not expect to that a certain clip or image in the music video.A good example of a surreal and abstract
music video is Katy Perry- E.T. ft. Kanye West. This video is abstract because
through out the video Katy turns in to a alien and in the music video there is
a abstract background of the solar system. A abstract music video refers to
something that you wouldn’t think would happen for example in this video Kane
west inside the robot rapping. Near to the end of the robot the robot turns in
to a man and they both walk away. The conventions for this video is a abstract
back ground and something in the video that refers to something that is not
real e.g. a alien
Interpretative
Interpretative is a
music video that interprets the visual directly in to a story that makes the
lyrics a good example of interpretative is Bad Meets Evil- Fast Lane ft.
Eminem, Royce Da 5’9 this music video is good example because the artist are
rapping but there hand actions are linked to the animations on the screen for
example “1 gallon car” they showed a cartoon car and both artist going in there
through out the video there was the lyrics on the screen. For this video there
hand actions were very important because the action tell the story. This video
is also linked to animation because all the lyrics were animated and the
transitions. The conventions for this video is rapping about girls talk about
money and having cars in the video.
Impressionist
A impressionist music
video is that has imagery that matches the mood and place of the song but does
not match the lyrics a good example of this is Snow Patrol- Open Your Eyes this
is a good example because it does match the pace of the beat and does match the
mood but the video is of someone driving on a road speeding up as the beat
speeds up. This is a very good example because one it does not match the lyrics
and two because the lyrics is about a relationship and they still focus on the
road .The conventions for this style is about a relationship and a video that
does not match the lyrics
The purpose of a music video, what is a music video and what’s it for?
A music video is if for entertainment purposes but can be sold on albums or singles. A music video is mostly for entertainment for the public and can be made for streaming sites such as YouTube, twitch, VEVO.
To promote a new music release
To create a visual representation of an artist
To extend the play-ability of and provide additional income from a song
To create synergy with other media sector
To be art in their own right
To create synergy with other media sector
Since music was aired on television artist are making music videos which have their own interruption to their song. Some artists make a music video for a good cause such as charity (children in need). Artists make videos to promote awareness for a product or to promote the album or single. Artist such as Don Diablo made a song for the new Batman game and released it a week before the game it’s self-came out. This video shows the game and the artist himself. By making this video with known DJ batman origins was promoted by the DJ and spinning records on YouTube and VEVO. The artist interpreted in his own way and how he thinks audio should sound. This music video benefits the audience because one it advertises "Batman Origins", Two its entertaining and make the audience stay to see who wins the fight Batman or Death stroke. Starting from 0:03 it shows the Batman logo and the game logo. Then from 0:008 is when both Batman and Death stroke start to fight and that's when the beat drops to sync the fight. Also at 1:47 when theirs a 123 beat they start to flash scene from the game its self to the DJ himself. Overall in the music video there is advertisement of the game and awareness of the DJ. As you can see in the music video the artist refers to bat man in the music video as the song was based on the game Batman Atkham asylum at 0.02 right from the start there is the game logo showing the video and song is based and synced to that. During the most of the music video the video consists of cinematic based on the game apart from some scene that when back and showed the artist at 3:30. The advantages to make a music video have synergy in it is that the music video its self is getting promoted by the game in this case and that the song is getting much more views that that means more of an income for the artist
To create a visual representation of an artist
The visual representation is where an artist has a unique presence to the audience. A good example is J. Cole with his song crooked smile ft. TLC. This song is a good representation of an artist because the artist himself used to sell drugs and knew how bad it was to him and his family. The song was based on a true story of a farther doing drugs and caused his daughter to get shot. J. Cole used different types of camera angle such as a close up of him crying because his daughter in the video died. At minuet 4.21 the video has a over the shoulder shot over the main police officer this is because the police officer lost his daughter the same way as J. Cole. This video is a good representation because it sends a message to people who do drugs at minuet 5.29 he typed the message he wanted to get across “Please reconsider your war on drugs". I think that the song and the music video itself is sending a message to the audiences benefiting them because the message is when times is hard with your family don't give up and stay on the right side and not take the wrong path. The advantages to this is its helping people that have a interest in music and gives them a message is take on board for the future but the disadvantages to this is people may take it the wrong way and think this is what the artist has done in the past to provide for there family.
To promote a new music release Since music was aired on television artist are making music videos which have their own interruption to their song. Artist use streaming websites such as YouTube and VEVO to publish their music video and use social media sites such as twitter and Facebook but a lot or artist use twitter more because the “tweet” out there music video link. Artist use these sites to raise awareness of new album or singles coming out. Sometimes a video release can become an event its self. For example when Michael Jackson released Thriller people stayed awake till midnight to watch the video. The video its self-got millions of views in 5 minuets. At 00.24 he drives in to the camera shot in a car and acting like its a film with a couple stranded with the car broken down. However before that happen at a film like title scene came up. Then at 04.25 is when the song its self starts but the when the song ends theirs going to be more acting like a there in a film. This benefits the audiences because its for there on entertainment and a event like this would never happen again from a artist like Michael Jackson. The advantages of this is that the audience is getting hyped up for the release and cant wait to view it so that mean that the artist would get more income however people may get board of waiting so they give up
To extend the play-ability of and provide additional income from a song
After releasing a
music video artist try and stay in the public eye to gain more views on music
channels and streaming websites such as YouTube. Some artist put their music
video on YouTube with a advert at the start giving them 10p-20p of revenue for
every view. VEVO earn revenue of £3.5k- £42.1k a month from linking the main
channel to the other artist VEVO accounts. They make up to £42.1k- £505.8k. A
good example of “play-ability” is Daft Punk- Get lucky ft., Pharrell Williams.
This song was played worldwide on streaming sites. Music channels. The song its
self was a hit but the song did start repeat its self because music channels
such as MTV would play the song a lot of times in a day and people would change
the channel because they may of heard it before and don’t want to hear again.
The song Daft Punk went to number one and was a hut worldwide because “Get
lucky” was there come back song to the music industry .for their official video
they have an advertisement at the start to get a profit from YouTube and there
record deal company. It is true that the song was repetitive but it was a hit none the less and was repeating on radios for over 2 months. When i say repetitive i mean like the lyrics in the song at 2:40 all they said for 20 seconds is "up all night to get lucky" the lyrics its self were very repeetivie with there lyrics through out the song
To be art in their own right
“Let’s take it
back to straight hip-hop”- Eminem- Brezerk
Art of their own is how the artist interruption their own song in
to their music video. For example Eminem’s song Berserk at the start of the
video he says “Let’s take it back to straight hip-hop”.
After he said the quote he made his video look like an old Hip Hop music video.
In the video there is multiply scene of an old song saying “everybody let yourself
go”. At the start of the video he comes in with a boom box and put a tape in
the player after the boon box is placed he starts to walk away with a bigger
boom box for the back ground. From 0:26 is when he starts to bring in the olden effect in and with them types of video it makes the audience think because if that's what the artist thinks about the song and interpenetrate it like that in the video who would you?
now days artist use fashion to express there emotions and what they think art is for example Lady Ga Ga uses art in all of her music videos she express the song in her clothing and what she thinks is the meaning of the music video. The song by Lady Ga Ga Applause is one of the best songs that explores art in fashion because through out the video she has multiple clothing from 0.02 - 0.07 there is 5-4 costume changes all that have a different look between them. I think she also uses fashion to match the mood and to add entertainment to the video for example at 0:14 you wouldn't think that she would be in a hat with a green coat sinning
