Goodwin's ideas about music video

Dancing In The Distraction Factory
Andrew Goodwin is the developer of the Goodwin theory, the Goodwin theory was written in the dancing in the distraction factory.
In the book Andrew Goodwin talks about techniques used in the filming Industry.

  • Iconography- relating objects to specific representations e.g. A R&B Soul song used more than and average amount of close ups to the artist singing .
  • Close up's- the record companies demand of close ups in music video's. for example Zedd stay the night
  • Voyeurism- looking at people, The Art Of Looking for example will i am ft dizzee rascal
  • Illustration- The video directly corresponds to the lyrics or to a lesser extent of the mood pf the song, For example Justin Timberlake- Mirrors
  • Amplification- The video is designed to enhance the style and the mood of the song, For example Eminem- Mocking bird
  • Contradict- The video deliberately goes against the lyrics and mood of the song. For example Imagine dragons Radioctive
  • Intertextuality - A music video that refers to other music videos or to films and television these provide gratification and pleasure for the viewers/fans, For example Drake- Hold on we're going home is based on scar face.

The relationship between the lyrics and video are shown through the visuals the music video which amplifies, illustrates and contradicts the lyrics of the artist.

 Illustration- Justin Timberlake
Illustration is when the lyrics matches the video Justin Timberlake is a good example because his song mirrors lyrics matches what's going on in the video and is in sync. For example at 0:40 he says all alone then the actress in the video is walking over to the jukebox alone and stands next to the juke box depressed until her friend comes over also every time Justin would sing "mirror" a mirror would come in front of someone "looking back me". Near to the end of the song the lyric "you are my love of my love" keeps getting repeated and show a old married couple getting lost in there love and reflection in the mirror. At that part of the music video the husband in the relationship died and the wife was still grieving remembering her lover from the past years.

Amplification- Eminem- Mocking bird

Amplification is  used so the audience is able to feel the mood of the song for example if the visuals in the video. For example Eminem Mocking Bird is a good example because it it makes people mood change to the song about his daughter. At 0:30 he says and i quote "Haley i know you miss your mum, i know you miss your dad, but when im gone" as he raps them lyrics the mood starts to change from being happy to distressed because he was saying what will you do when im gone and what will your mother do. At 0:24 he starts to rap about how they couldn't stay in one house this adds more to the upsetting mood because it makes the audience feel upset and feel sorry for him and his family. Also at 2:55 he says "You and mummy had to leave me" i think this adds more to the mood because its about him leaving his family to provide for them and not the best situation a farther should be when they have a child.

Intertextuality-  Drake- Hold on we're going home
Intertexuality is when another media outlet is used in another such as a music video being based on a blockbuster film. For example  Drake- Hold on we're going home is based on scar face. At 0:59 when they say salute the same scene was in scarface after there party. Also in the whole music video he wears the same iconic suite as the man his self scarface. At 4:58 when the gun shooting starts in the shipping yard is in the film scarface and before that when he kills the "rat" hes looking up the same actor as in scarface. As the film was based on The Mafia and a the start of scarface it start n a bar making a toast the same as the music video also at the end when the have the gun fight was a icon remake in the film

Voyeurism- Dizzee Rascal Something really bad
Voyeurism is when females and males are used to get the audiences attention. A good example is Dizzee Rascal be cause his song Something really bad is a good voyeurism example because the song its self is about women and at 0:04 from the start there 2 girls showing alot of skin to get the male audience attention also he wanted the male audience to stay thought out the video because there are alot of girls not wearing alot of clothing. From 0:54 he says "i love it when the bad girls do it like that" they after the lyric he shows a close up of a girl licking her lips the 2 girls with not much clothing dancing. Then at 1:18 when the 2 dancers are i he front of the screen there are also 2 more girls at the backing but the artist made it look like that both dancers were kissing i think the artist wanted this to attract more of a male audience because of the high amount of sex appeal.

Close- Up's- Zedd stay the night
close up's are usually of the band or main singer, the close up's are demanded from the record company so the audience can feel closer to the band or artist a good example of close up's is Zedd stay the night because right from the start there is a close up of the main singer in the song. In the first minuet there is 7 close ups of the main singer to show how close they want to be with the audience but through out the song there is 36 close up's of the artist. From the first close up but the facial expressions giving of her is that is is in a dilemma if she wants to stay with her boyfriend or go.

Iconography- Avicii Wake me up
Iconography is when particular images or videos is associated with the genre of the music or clothing buy the actors or artist for example Avicii's song wake me up right from the start and throughout the song you can hear the guitar being played and goes with the country genre but at the chorus it goes with the dace genre fast and having a based with the lyrics. In the music video its self it goes more to a country video because at 1:30 the actress gets on a horse and rigs through a field. I think that the video its self avoids the stereotype of a country music video because even though the song is dance and country the video is both aswell because like i said before a girl riding thought a field and there is also as live in the music video

Contradicting- Imagine dragons Radioactive
Contradicting is when the music video visual does not match the lyrics being sung. A good example is Imagine Dragons Radioactive. This is a good example because the song is about the further and how it used to be. However the music video is about a puppet composition. At 2:24 he repeats "welcome to the new age" but the scene that is being played is a puppet being punched and does not mean the same thing is=f the song was about the further and how is was before. Right at the start of the video it show that the band is in captivity I think that this is the only part that relates to the history of the world. As the song is called radioactive you wouldn't think that a puppet would be radioactive and have powers...
